When it heats up there is nothing more refreshing than an icy-pole or ice-lolly. The trouble is most store bought varieties contain loads of refined sugar and often artificial colours, flavours and preservatives, not great! Add to this the packaging and buying icy poles is not very eco-friendly either. So instead why not make your own icy poles using fresh organic fruit and vegetables? Below we show you how easy and simple it really is to make healthy, organic icy poles, which make great healthy summer treatfor both you and the kids!
To make your own icy poles you do need a few basic pieces such as either a cold press juice extractor, or hand citrus press, stick or jar blender, plus of course the all
important icy pole moulds that are from safe, inert plastic e.g Polypropylene (PP No#5 plastic). The ones in our image are a very clever screw up icy pole mould made from PP that I found at Howard Storage.

Healthy Icy Pole Recipes
Grab a selection of organic fruits and vegetables your family like to eat. When it comes to vegetables it is best to stick with sweeter ones e.g beetroot and carrots, but if you have a very good blender that will really pulverize vegetables to a smooth consistency, you can add in vegetables such as fresh spinach and kale to make a super healthy icy pole.
LivingSafe's Organic Beetroot, Kiwi and Orange Icy-Poles- A Healthy 100% Natural Red Icy Pole

Method - First thoroughly wash, then peel, then wash again the fruit and beetroot, as even organic fruit and vegetables must be washed well to remove pathogens and bacteria found in the soil. Then we used a cold-press manual wheat-grass juice extractor and added equal amounts of orange and kiwi fruit and about half that amount in beetroot. Pour into moulds and freeze. You can also add a little freshly squeezed, organic lemon juice to help preserve your icy poles for longer and keep them fresh.
* Note- as these contain fresh beetroot juice, they will stain clothing, so when giving to children beware! If your children are adverse to finding bits of fruit in their icy-poles, then strain juice first before pouring into moulds.
