Why Hemp Curtains are Healthier, Eco-Friendly and Safer.
Recently my 6 year old son needed new curtains for his very small bedroom, but I wanted to ensure his bedroom curtains were safe and not off-gassing, dangerous VOC’s ( Volatile Organic Compounds). So Hemp bedroom curtains, a healthy eco curtain that doesn’t off-gas was the way to go.

Knowing as much as I do about the health issues of PVC coated fabrics, chemical stain resistant treatments and the fire retardant chemicals used in conventional curtains, furniture and bedding, I scoured the web for a safer fabric to get my son’s curtains made from.
I was looking for either, certified organic cotton, bamboo or hemp curtains and I came across the Australian company the Hemp Gallery and saw that they had hemp fabrics for sale. I then called them up and spoke to Beatrice one of the owners and she said absolutely, she could happily custom make some lined hemp curtains for me.
I then asked Beatrice a few important key safety questions first:
Where is the Hemp Grown?
The hemp for our fabrics are grown and processed in China without any chemicals. When my husband and i started the company, we personally went over to China to check out various hemp production factories and e chose to work with only hemp manufacturers that had also received the highest European certifications for ethics and safety and also manufacturers that didn’t use dangerous chemicals to process their hemp.
Do the fabrics undergo any type of toxic treatments?
Absolutely not the hemp is first mechanically broke down, then fruit enzymes and a natural bacteria are used to breakdown and soften the hemp fibers so it can be made into the fabric. The fabric is then washed in 40 degree water twice to remove the fruit acids.
Where are the curtains actually made?
Hemp Gallery employs independent home sewers in Sydney to sew their curtains.
How are the fabrics coloured?
Although we do not use vegetable dyes ( we find they do not work well with the hemp) the dyes used by Hemp Gallery are all low VOC dyes.
What is the curtain lining made from?
The lining is a blend of hemp and certified organic Turkish cotton.
I saw on your website that you do offer fabric treatments that are water based; e.g. stain and fire retardant treatments, why do you offer these? Doesn’t it go against the whole natural concept?
We need to offer this option as it is a safety requirement for commercial properties; e.g. hotels
So I personally loved the honesty and transparency of Hemp Gallery and as you can see from the photo, I chose to go with their natural hemp fabric that had not been coloured and my son and I both love his new curtains.
