Using a Building Biologist To Measure EMF In Your Home.
As we become more aware of the potential health hazards of EMF radiation, we want to make sure we are not being exposed to dangerously high levels of EMF in our home. Below you will learn why using a Building Biologist to measure EMF in your home is the only accurate way to measure EMF in your home.
But is it really as simple as purchasing a Gauss Meter on eBay and going around our house and office measuring the EMF readings off electrical equipment and mobile phones, Although seemingly cheap and easy to do, is it an accurate, safe and effective way to measure EMF?
What about the many different types of mobile phone radiation shielding stickers and gizmos that are meant to protect us, do they really work?
I posed these very questions to Lucinda Curran, the president of the Australian Society of Building Biologists.

In the case of EMF why do we need a qualified Building Biologist? Why can’t we just buy our own Gauss meter and measure our own house?
A Building Biologist offers an objective overview of what is going on. As well, we understand many areas that can impact upon someone’s health, and can often identify contributing factors that the residents may have overlooked. One of my teachers told us a story about being called out to assess the impact of a phone tower, but when the person opened the door, their home was completely covered in mould. I often find that people attribute their health ails to what I see as the “final straw.” It is because of this that they can be slow to address the other causes, and this can be what is impeding their recovery.
Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are very complex. Not only are there many types of EMF but they behave in different ways, and different equipment is required to test them.
For example, ELF electric fields are incredibly easy to influence. Many untrained people will measure them with an all-in-one meter and others just use body voltage. Neither of these are the correct methods for measuring these fields because, in the case of the former, by being in the field, you have already changed it, and in the latter case, body voltage does not demonstrate the electric fields that you are exposed to.
As building biologists, we all have seen buildings that have been inappropriately shielded, which has then exacerbated the problem for the clients. Poorly done shielding can create a Faraday cage effect – whereby the interior space is completely cut off from natural radiation, which is believed to be healing. As well, without proper advice on how to inhabit a shielded space, people inadvertently trap radio-frequencies inside, creating what is known as “hotspots.”
Do Radiation Shielding Stickers and Radiation Protection Gadgets Really Work?
Another thing to be wary of are the many well-marketed devices that provide no measurable effect, and thus can give people a false sense of security, which in turn can cause them to unwittingly increase their EMF exposure.
I have had many people tell me that EMF doesn’t need assessing as they have a plug-in device that protects their home from EMF for 25 metres. Of all the ones I have measured, the only difference I can measure is an increase to these fields.
One of my bugbears is the “radiation shielding” sticker that you can put on your mobile (cell) phone. Many people have these and believe that they are protected from the effects of their mobile phones. As a result, they use their phones for much longer. Again, these stickers do not reduce radiofrequency exposure in any measurable way.
There are a lot of devices out there, and as Building Biologists, we need to be able to demonstrate their effectiveness. If this is not possible, we will not recommend them.
Some of the companies that sell these devices claim that they work to protect people from geopathic stress. which is usually assessed by dowsing. They may well work at this level, but this is very different to what the general public believes that they are buying.
Earthing mats are another issue. They claim to drop your body voltage, and this is true. But by standing, laying or leaning on one, you can significantly increase the electric fields that you are exposed to. This is because you are a great conductor and provide an easy way for these fields to return to earth. (I have written a post about this which you can read here.)
To be able to calibrate and measure EMF correctly take know how and training and this is where hiring a Building Biologist to accurately measure EMF radiation is by far the safest and most reliable method.
