Treating Your Pets With Alternative Therapies
Alternative therapies for humans have become extremely popular due to their holistic approach to healing and overall better health and well-being. These days our pets can also benefit from various types of alternative therapies; e.g. Massage, Reiki, Craniosacral Therapy and Bowen Therapy have all become very popular ways to treat animals suffering from pain and chronic illness, anxiety and many other ailments.
How Massage Therapy Helped My Dog
I can personally attest to massage for canines. I used to have a beautiful Maltese X and when he got to 15 he was really struggling with arthritis and seemed on his last legs when I met an animal remedial masseuse in my local dog park. She suggested that I bring Jesse, my dog, for a massage as it will help to ease his pain and improve his mobility. I thought it was certainly worth a try and so I took him along for his very first massage and I can honestly say it truly gave him a new lease on life, after the very first treatment he was really walking with a lot more ease. Dear little Jesse got to 16 and a half years old and I really believe his weekly massages had a lot to do with it. I had also taken my cat Topaz and Jesse in the past for acupuncture, naturopathic and homeopathic treatment, but I have to say that it was the massage that really impressed me with its results .
I invited Holistic Animal Therapist, Melissa Scriberras from Pawsitive Therapies to write an article for me about the positive health benefits that dogs, cats and all animals can achieve from alternative treatments.
Health Benefits of Alternative Therapies for Pets by Melissa Scriberras
- For many years humans have enjoyed the benefits of alternative therapies and in recent times more and more pets have also been exposed to alternative therapists. Whilst taking our pets to the vet is of importance when they are sick, natural pet therapies can also complement and benefit our pets health.
Alternative therapies involves treating the ‘whole’ animal and bringing it back to a state of health and wellness rather than just treating our pets symptoms. These therapies can be used in times of illness and poor health and can also be used for improving our pets health, happiness and well-being in general. Alternative therapies are safe and becoming more popular as pet owners can appreciate the improvement in health they experience with such treatments and want their pets to experience this also. Pet owners are also increasingly wanting to avoid/minimise the administration of drugs to their pets, so seek alternative therapies for a more healthy approach.
Some of the more popular alternative therapies include:
The Benefits Of Massage For Animals:
excellent for rehabilitation and relaxation; assisting with pain reduction and improved range of movement. Effective for senior care, arthritis management, muscle injury/degeneration, recovery from illness/surgery, stress and anxiety.
Bowen Therapy Helping Animals:
excellent for rehabilitation and relaxation; balances bodily organs and their functions, optimises health and acute/chronic issues. Effective for muscle injury/degeneration, joint mobility, pain relief prior/post surgery, senior care and arthritis management.
Craniosacral Therapy Assisting Animals:
excellent for releasing tension and harmonise the central nervous system to optimise body movement and correct imbalances. Helpful for problems stemming from head/spinal injury, anxiety, behavioural problems, pre/post surgery and hip dysplasia.
Treating Animals With Reiki:
an energy healing treatment that addresses physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues. Works by balancing the flow of energy in the body. Assists with recovery from illness/surgery, acute and chronic conditions, relaxation, behavioural problems and maintaining health.
