Why I choose to sleep on a certified organic cotton mattress
The reason why I choose to sleep on a certified organic mattress is simple, it is because I want to sleep in as healthy an environment as possible.
I stumbled across the organic bedding company, Organature, during a period when I was researching and writing about healthier and safer bedding options for young children.
In recent years, numerous scientific studies, (see here) have been done on conventional cotton, synthetic foam and fire retardant treated, mattresses and bedding, in order to measure the amounts of VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) being released from them and the results were anything but good. These studies proved that when we sleep on conventional bedding, we are exposing ourselves to a heavy dosing of off-gases, from a vast range of toxic compounds and it is making us sick.
This knowledge was frightening and I became committed to ensuring that my own childrens sleeping zones, were as healthy as I could possibly make them.
Both my children slept on Organature, certified organic cotton, cot mattresses, and both have now graduated to adult size, single Organature spring mattresses and use the Organature organic cotton, quilts and pillows.
As a parent, it has been very reassuring knowing that for the last 9 years, my kids have been sleeping on pure, natural and environmentally friendly, certified organic cotton.
Making the switch to a certified organic mattress
Earlier this year, I too made the switch to an Organature queen size, spring mattress. I finally decided to get rid of my synthetic, uncomfortable and very pricey, Tempur mattress. In all honesty I can say I have never slept better, as this bed actually breathes. I used to feel like I was cooking in the Tempur mattresses and sleeping on something with the consistency of Playdoh.
Sleeping on a certified organic cotton filled spring mattress, I no longer get overheated, I well am supported (the bed is nice and firm). I know longer wake up during the night with pins and needles in my shoulders and arms and my allergies are much better. I also really love that I am supporting an ethical, Australian, small business, that is doing the right thing by their customers in providing them with a truly healthy bed!
